Dear Parents,
This week your child continues the Bible unit Adventures with God. This week’s adventure is about Joshua and the Battle of Jericho ( Joshua 2, 5:13-6:27). Joshua sent two spies into the city of Jericho, which was enclosed by large walls.
A woman of the city, Rahab, invited the spies into her house and hid them on her roof from Jericho’s soldiers. In return for her help, the spies promised Rahab they would not destroy her house during their attack. She hung a red cord from her window so they would know which house was hers.
The spies returned to the children of Israel with news that the people of Jericho were terrified of them and of their God. This boosted the Israelites’ confidence, and they followed God’s plan. They were in for quite an adventure!
God’s instruction for taking Jericho was for the Israelite’s to march around it for seven days and then blow their horns very loudly. If it had been up to the Israelite’s to conquer the city, this would certainly not have been their plan of attack. But God’s battle strategy was quite different; all the Israelite’s had to do was obey, and God would take care of the demolition.
And that He did! After the people made seven trips around the city on the seventh day, they began to shout, and the walls of Jericho crumbled to the ground. The children of Israel were able to conquer the city without raising their swords.
Your child will learn about God’s amazing power this week. He or she will see how God led His people and empowered them. Your child will also study Joshua’s obedience and leadership as he guided the people through a strange set of directions to defeat the enemy. He or she will see how obedience to God leads to success and safety.
Remind your child that you love him or her, and that is why you too have rules in place for your child’s safety and success. And do not forget to rejoice in God’s power when He helps you conquer your obstacles, fears, and problems.
Thank you for helping your child learn the Bible truth.
Things to talk about at home:
- Is there any problem too big for God?
- What are some problems you’ve faced? How has God shown His power over your problem?
- What are some ways you can obey God?
